Jeff Dunham on Bill O'reilly

I am sure I posted this before but I really think the short clip of Jeff when he was 13(I believe he said it was when he was 13 in his book) with Bill O'Reilly show how great his skill is and his character Monty Ballew. Obviously Jeff has gone on to make comedy history and deservedly so. His dedication to his dreams and hard work prove you can achieve your goals if only you stick to it and strive for greatness.

Way to go Jeff!

Side note: Just heard an interview with Jeff on Opie and Anothony on youtube and he said he was 14 in the interview.

With 2011 becoming a memory and 2012 getting ready to kick off, We wanted to say thank you to everyone we had the great opportunity to spend time with, to talk to, to share with, and to learn from during 2011.

Going to the ventriloquist Convention in July is always a highlight and you can read about it in my July and August posts. It was a Wonderful tribute to the Great Jimmy Nelson. We're looking forward to seeing all of you again in July 2012 and hopefully we will have a surprise or two in store.

2012 has some interesting and fun things in store for all of us. IT continues to be the 150th commemorations of the American Civil War with some major battles such as thye Battle of Antietam in Maryland. Lets take some time to remember those who gave all then and now to keep this great nation free.

It is also the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. I recently learned there was a very sizable battle that took place here in Michigan near what is now Trenton. I am looking to read more about it.

2012 is also the year the Mayan calendar runs out so there is the scare about that. I recall when iw as in 8th grade the planets were going to align and that was supposed to cause the world to end as well, but here I am writing this blog some 30 years later, HOLY MOLEY 30 years later! where does the time go?? ha! Well my friends I think this too will pass without catastrophic events other than the man made events resulting from their paranoia. Well at least I hope so! hehe.

For now, have a VERY Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Jay Johnson on the MDA Labor Day Telethon

Great performance by Jay Johnson and his friend, the Worlds only Genus Reptilious Articulous. (If I spelled that correctly hehe).

Jay has fantastic lip control and brings his characters to life with such apparent ease. A great inspiration to Vents as well as VERY entertaining to all who get the chance to see him perform.

Tonight there will be a special on the Biography channel about Jeff Dunham and his career as a Ventriloquist. I have read the book and listened to the audio version and I know Jeff has worked hard to get where he is and even harder to maintain it. This looks like a wonderful behind the scenes look into his world through the good and bad times. I am looking forwad to seeing this.

Dick Smith Oscar for lifetime achievement

I think it appropriate to take a minute to acknowledge that on Saturday November 12th, 2011 Mr. Dick Smith, make-up artist, was honored with an Oscar for life time achievement in make-up artistry. The ceremony had a nice tribute by J.J. Abrams and a very touching presentation by Smith protégé Rick Baker. Dick Smith has touched so many lives with his makeup knowledge but more so with his kindness and genuine love of people. My personal story goes back to July 19th, 1990 when I was a young 22 yr old kid who wanted to learn more about how to break down a full face sculpt into multiple pieces, a technique which Dick pioneered many years prior. I had read in an issue of the magazine Cinefex that Dick lived in Larchmont New York at the time so I called information and low and behold they had his number listed. I wrote it down and contemplated for a few minutes and then made the call. The voice on the other end of the line was unassuming and warm. He greeted my call like an old friend and quickly eased my nerves with his reception of a makeup enthusiast looking to the master for knowledge. 45 minutes later I had a good understanding of not only how to break down the sculpture but a great recipe for PA-X paint for my final foam latex prosthetics. This made a huge impression on me and to this day, 22 years later, I still look back on that call and smile. Yes I still have my original notes, I keep them safely stored within the binders housing Dicks course in advanced makeup, which I was fortunate to be accepted to several years later. I will share that story another time but for now, Thank you Dick for all you have done, not only for makeup but for humanity. You are an inspiration to us all. God Bless you.

I fell in love with Middle Earth and Hobbits when I was in 7th grade and read the hobbit and Lord of the rings. I have to admit I really enoy the books, films, and all things Hobbits. Looking forward to the release of The Hobbit in December of 2012, Wow I hope it comes out before 12/21/12 when the Inca Calendar stops. I love the behind the scenes stuff for the makeup and the insite in the 3D process they are using. Good stuff. Anywhooo enjoy the video and support Middle Earth and Hobbits. ;)

Well here it is..23 minutes left of this, our favorite time of year. We're sad to see it go but we had a blast this year. We began decorating the house in September and kept on right through today. This year we were surprised to have Zac, Shawna, Nick and kristina join us. All in costume. Tamara was a Zombie and I must say a damn good looking one ;) I decided to do a mad deformed scientist theme. We had the Neighbors over for dinner, which was very nice, I look forward to having them over more. Good people. Buster had to have a costume this year as well so of course he wanted to be a Ghost"Buster", we thought it was a great idea and got his the costume. heh.

Yes folks..THE Detroit Lions are 5 and 0 on the season! This is the first time since 1956 and we're loving it. They have finally put together a team with potential AND the ability to harness that potential. They have ahd skilled players before but they were never able to capatalize on them.

I am not usually too thrilled by sequals, however the latest remix of "The Thing" looks like it will be a worthy follow-up, or prequal as th case may be, to the original John Carpenter version from 1982. The effects for the original were created by Rob Bottin, a fantastic makeup artist! I imagine a lot of the effects in the newest installment will be computer generated.

I am looking forward to seeing this next weekend.

Renaissance Faire 2011

Tamara and I recently had the opportunity to attend the Michigan Renaissance Festival which is held every year typically in August and September.

It was a nice day not too hot not too cold. We both dressed in "Ren Fest" clothing to partake in the festivities.

I was disapointed to find that the Magician who I have enjoyed for years was no longer working the Faire and I did not see another magic stage show present this year. I also notice there seems to not be any Ventriloquists who perform this Faire. We made our way in and since it was lunch time we decided we needed to have one the of Monster Turkey legs which is standard fare at these events.

Being the day was warm it also made good cause to enjoy a barley pop or three. We spent the day roaming about looking in the shops and checking out their wares along with a couple shows. One of the shows I always want to see when I go to the Renaissance festival is "The Ded Bob Sho". Ded Bob has been a staple of the Michigan Renaissance Festival as long as I can remember and still draws in huge crowds. Of course the show hasn't changed much if any but the ad-libs are great and the show is just plain funny.

The show may not always be politically correct and is geared more towards adults with the politcal topics and such but it is well worth seeing and be sure to throw a "fiver" his way at the end.

We were able to make it to the last joust of the day which is always fun. This particular event was a "Vulgarian" Joust which meant the rules were there are no rules. Based on our area in the stands we had the knight in blue who hailed from Ireland.

one of the contests was hand to hand combat while mounted. The object was to knock the symbol off the top of the opponants helmet...well our Knight sure did that.

You can see in the photo how the symbol just exploded when he hit it..was pretty, pretty, pretty cool.

WE decided to attend the Renaissance Smoker this year as we had 2 yrs ago and was not disappointed. The premise is this..all adults..drinks and food and non stop fun. The irony was that with registration you recieved drinks and food and 2 cigars. Well with the new laws in Michigan you cannot smoke indoors so the Renaissance Smoker was smoke free. The Bawdy Boys host this event and it is a good time. Be sure to check them out and if you get a chance attend the Renaissance Smoker.

With the Smoker over we decided to make one last round of the shoppes before heading home.

I am excited and looking forward to next year. I even started making and cutting the steel rings to make some chain maille...who knows..(more to come)

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 9

Saturday July 16th

"Write a 5 minute act with Jeff and the guys".

After the Vent Haven Tour we made our way back to the Drawbridge to get a good seat for Jeff Dunhams lecture. Each year Jeff does a lecture and this year he was excited to share so many news things with the Vent community. Before getting into the topic of writing a 5 minute Vent act he shared with us his excitement of a new technology called 3D printing. 3D pritngin has been around for a few years but has come a long way. He showed us some things he had printed such as a pair of Charlie McCarthy hands, a Brain Gear that worked as printed along with a working cresent wrench! When i say working I mean they had moving parts that worked after being printed! Too Cool!

It was very cool to see his pure excitement over this new technology and how it can be used. He was like a kid with a new toy and it was neat.

Jeff also shared with us that there will be a new Comedy Central special coming out on September 25th with the dvd being out the following Tuesday. Well I preordered my bluray already and you can too. It will be sure to be another great show with Jeff and our friends Walter, Peanut, Jose, and ??? There will be some new surprises in store and a reintroduction of an older routine that I am very excited to see..lets just say Peanut is taking Jeff on to prove he can be a Ventriloquist too. Peanut will introduce his "Little Dummy" and do his routine. Having said that Jeff told the group of his hope to have 'Little JD' available for sale in stores by the end of the year, which would be Extremely Cool! Lets keep our eyes open for them at Christmas time. I know I want 1..or 2..

If my excitement for this new special and the potential for a cool new "Little JD" vent figure aren't obvious let em say this..I Am excited about this! Jeff has done SO much to bring Ventriloquism back into the forefront and prove it can be cool again. Thank you Jeff!

By now your saying..what happened to the "5 minute act"? Well we did spend about 5 minutes going over the key points of writing and putting a 5 minute act together and it was, as always, good information, but by now everyone was a buzz with the new Comedy Central special, 3D printing technology, and"Little JD" that there wasn't much time left. Great presentation Jeff.

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 8

Saturday July 16th

After being lazy bums and going for Starbucks we made our way to 33 West Maple for the coveted Vent Haven Museum tour. The gem that is Vent Haven goes unnoticed I am sure by some who drive by while others from around the world make way to the Mecca of ventriloquism. Since it is against policy to publish photos of the inside of the museum I will say this..Go! You will not regret it! (To those who don't know this policy; read the posting in the buildings and please repsect them)

W.S. Burger and all who have followed in his footsteps have done a Stellar job of preserving our heritage and history. With many figures and books, photos and displays of all things Ventriloquism you could spend days and not truely see it all.

If I lived near there I would have to pay rent because I would be there more then home.

It was nice to see Jimmy Nelson sitting, relaxing by the newly named Jimmy Nelson building and to be able to get a personalized drawing from Kelly Asbury, author od Dummy days.

Of course as always Mark and Chris Donahoe were at the road greeting folks as they came to the Mueseum. Mark and Chris are two great guys who make the ConVention a blast every year.

We finished up this years tour and headed back to the Drawbridge to get a good seat for the upcoming Jeff Dunham Lecture.."Write a 5 minute act with Jeff and the guys" presented by Who else? Terry fator...nah just kidding..Terry had already left the day before. Seriously, Jeff Dunham puts together a lecture every year to present and this years lecture was a treat for many reasons...

But..you'll have to come back for the next installment to find out why ;)

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 6

OOps I seem to have put up installment 7 before 6. Here is number 6 out of order. Boy is my face red..no not really..enjoy.

Friday July 15th

Today was a highlight as it was Group Photo day and allows for everyone to meet and take photos with others and their puppets/figures. This year they were filming for a new documentary so they took the photo then staged the coming and going of vents as they came for the group shot. Should be interesting ;)

Bob Rumba’s lecture on “taking creative photos” was very interesting and fun to watch his creativity in action. Bob uses so many interesting promo photos and has SO many characters and looks. Bob is multi talented as a ventriloquist, magician, balloon creations and Great impressions of such noted personalities as Ed Sullivan, Barney Fife, Charlie Chaplin, and many more.

At 3:30 we were treated to “A conversation with Terry Fator”. Terry shared his thoughts on vent and his success. Some inside stories of his characters and the process of being on America got talent. Terry then brought out Winston for some quick exchanges. The new Winston is a beautiful puppet and would be great to see more of him. After the conversation between terry and Mark Wade Terry made himself available for photos and autographs. This is where things were not so organized and really made me realize how immature some adults can be. The guy I was sitting next to started pushing me to rush the stage while I was behind the camera crew and had no where to go. He then began swearing at the gentleman next to him who was just trying to catch up to his wife who he had become separated from. Tamara was about 5 people ahead of me so I just stayed back and got her picture with Terry and made for the door. I guess my point was this..be patient everyone will get the chance for a picture if they are just patient. I thought everyone was mature and adult, I thought wrong in this case. LOL

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 7

Friday July 15th continued..

After Dinner break was part 2 of the Jimmy Nelson tribute. We were there as early as we could to try to get a better seat for the presentation. The presentation was opened with a special film called “70 minutes of laughter” which was made by Tom Ladshaw and was a wonderful snapshot tribute to Jimmy. We laughed at the videos of Jimmy and the gang, which are timeless. After the film Mark Wade introduced Jimmy to a Standing ovation.

Mark then introduced the mayor of Fort Mitchell Kentucky who proclaimed July 15th 2011 Jimmy Nelson Day in Fort Mitchell.

Terry Fator then read a letter from, I believe it was Nestles in appreciation of all the years of service with the Nestle company.

Next up Albert Alfero presented Jimmy with a bronze bust that Al sculpted and had cast of Jimmy.

Kelly Asbury read a letter from the Kentucky House of Representatives, apparently their spell check doesn’t know the difference between utmost and almost, but it was a good laugh and a nice gesture anyway.

Now it was Jay Johnsons turn to present a letter to Jimmy. This letter was from the ..(drum roll) the White house. It was a nice letter however it made it sound as if Jimmy was retired, which we hope isn’t the case for a very long time.

Jeff Dionise is the art director for USA today and the artist who created the great tribute poster for this special event. Jeff presented Jimmy with a one of kind poster to commemorate this special tribute to Jimmy.

Mark Wade presented Jimmy with a special award for his years in entertainment and his unending contributions to the art of Ventriloquism and contributions to the ConVention year after year.

Brook Brooking, President Vent Haven Museum, was up next. He presented Jimmy with a special plaque proclaiming Jimmy the “Dean” of ventriloquism, which is a tribute he greatly deserved with all of his contributions to the art of ventriloquism as well as his continued dedication to the museum on the board of advisors and his inspiration to SO many ventriloquists.

Jeff Dunham, who was and is inspired to be a ventriloquist by Jimmy’s record “instant Ventriloquism’ now joined them on the stage. Jeff shared his appreciation for Jimmys inspiration and then presented Jimmy with a true mark of appreciation as agreed upon by the vent Haven Board of Directors and advisors. The special display building is now officially, The Jimmy Nelson Building. Jimmy, you earned this!

What a great Tribute to an even greater man and his family. Jimmy and Betty Nelson are two of the sweetest people you could ever meet. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him and share in this special tribute.
With the tribute wrapped up the convention continued on with the vent haven Raffle. The raffle is always a fun event with advisors running around for about 10-15 minutes selling tickets in a frenzy. There are always nice figures raffled as well as numerous other vent (and some non vent) related items. Unfortunately Tamara nor I were lucky enough to win but that’s ok as the raffle ticket sales go directly to help Vent Haven.

With all of the excitement we now made way to the dealers’ rooms again for one more pass then back to the hospitality suite for laughs and camaraderie.

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 5

The room was buzzing with excitement. It was Thursday July 14th and this was sure to be a special night at the 35th annual Vent Haven ventriloquist ConVention.

On Wednesday the attendees were treated to an hour with Jimmy and Betty Nelson as guests of honor. Tonight is when part 1 of the two night tribute began. Along with Jimmy and Betty were their sons, daughters, and one of their grand children. The tribute opened with Bob Isaacson and "Donny O'Day", Danny's twin brother/stunt double (well maybe) and presenting Jimmy with a gift pocket watch from the Nestle company.

After Bobs' presentation Tom Ladshaw brought Jimmy and Betty onto the stage.
Next came a presentation by Tom Ladshaw to Jimmy of the original Texaco hat he wore back during his days doing commercials for the texaco hour. Jimmy said the hat didn't fit him as it once did but said Danny's hat still fit him just fine, go figure.

Tom then introduced their children who were in the audience and asked them to share any stories they had of growing up in the Nelson household. The stories were great and we found out Jimmy makes some of the best pancakes ever!

After a great presentation and brief history of Jimmys career in entertainment were were treated to a visit from our old friends Danny O'Day and Farfel.

The smile on everyones face was fantastic but more so the smile on Jimmy's face when he was talking to his life long partners. Priceless.

After part 1 of this tribute it was time to relax and enjoy the company of the hospitality suite once more..LOVE it!

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 4

Thursday July 14th. Day 2 of the 35th Annual Ventriloquist ConVention.

The schedule for these events is jam packed with lectures and events for every type of performer or hobbyist. The first lecture we attended was "Generating Great Ideas for vents" with Mark wade (who is a great man, more on this later) and Ken Groves. They covered tips and advice to make your shows and presentations better and different from the norm, if there is a norm when it comes to ventriloquists.

During the lecture Mark made an announcement with Steve Axtell about a great new product from Axtell Expressions called "Mic Mouth". This is a new take on having a mouth ON a volunteer instead of strapping a whole face onto the victim...I mean willing volunteer you simply hold a microphone in front of them. This will be a great seller for Axtell! I plan on ordering one as well. Great job Steve!!

After lunch was the Junior Open Mic. We were impressed by the talent these young vents had and how creative the routines were. Great job Juniors!

After a short break the Senior open mic began. Now I know it's called senior open mic but it's not only for geriatric ventriloquists. Had to make sure you understaood ;) The senior open mic was hosted by Al Getler who did a great job of introducing the acts and a short interview after ward. Unfortunately we were not able to watch many of the Seniors as Tamara was asked to an interview..she can tell more about that but I must say I was proud of her for going to it and doing it, being a new vent and all..she did great.

After the Senior open mic was a round table discussion on "What makes a pro?" hosted by Al Getler with panelists Sammy King, Al Semok, Don Bryan, Dan Horn, Pete Micheals and Peggy Miller. The discussion was focused on what aspects of performing and ventriloquism are what defines a person as a "pro".

After the round table was dinner break. We were joined by Tom Lane for dinner at Sweet Basil a thai food place that is just awsome!

After dinner we hurried back for what was to be a beggining to the wonderful tribute to the one and only Jimmy Nelson.

With the first of many visits to the dealers room over we headed to the Hospitality Suite to meet up with old and new friends. The Hospitality suite is put on each year by Bob Hamill and Phillip Jones and along with the great hospitality staff which includes Chris and Mark Donahoe,and a group of great folks who help out in every capacity during the event. First things first we had to catch up with Bob Hamill who is one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet. Unfortunately his lovely wife was unable to attend as she is working many shows in Pigeon Forge and was unable to get away. We missed you Marty!

With the first night over we made out way back to the hotel to rest up for what will certainly be a busy day tomorrow..

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 2

The first day of the ConVention was Wednesday July 13th. We hit the road about 11:00 am for the 4 1/2 hour drive. Roxie and Buster in the back seat and we no sooner pulled out of the drive way that Buster was causing trouble. The infamous phrase "stop touching me", "I'm not touching you" was all we heard for the first few miles..then the excitement must have worn off and they settled in for the drive.

Along the way we decided we needed to stop for lunch so we began to scan the area for a potential place to stop. There..off in the distance..is it a McDonalds? a Burger King? No..it's a Bob Evans..yeah..Bob Evans would be better then one of those quickie drive thrus right? well..maybe not in this case. We decided that the Angus Burger looked juicy and tasty.."lets try that!". When it arrived at our table it was the most listless..tasteless..dried out thing you have ever seen..we couldn't help but laugh. Medium typically means pink in the middle..but not there..to them it means burned thru and thru. LOL. Not being one to complain about things in fear f what will happen in the kitchen we struggled through it as best we could.

With the dried out burger escapade behind us we hit the road again..next stop..Fort Mitchell Kentucky.

we arrived in town around 4:30-5:00 and went to the hotel to drop off our luggage before going to register at the conVention.

Arriving at the Drawbridge Inn around 5:30 we made out way to Canterbury Hall and signed up for the 4 days of Ventrilquial goodness.

The schedule was sure to be a full one and we were there in time for the opening night show. The show is always started with a great introduction from mark Wade the ConVention Chairman. mark has Charied this ConVention for many years and he and his staff work endless hours to prepare the event and this year would be no exception. The show was Mc'd by Bob Hamill and Phillp Jones and they were hilarious. Between the great Mind reading act and the polyphoney by seargent sound the fun was mounting. The acts for the Wednesday night show were Mike Hemmelgarn with a juggling comedy and vent routine, Neale Bacon with his friends which included a little girl figure he is putting back into the act, and closing the show was pete Michaels who did a great routine with his little poveroti character. It was a great show to open the festivities.

After the opening show there was a panel discussion on "The Importance of Women in Ventriloquism". The panel was hosted by Lynn Trefzger and also featured, Sylvia Fletcher, Liz VonSeggen, Mary Kingly and Peggy MIller. It was interesting to hear the thoughts and experiences from the ladies perspective.

After the panel discussion the dealers rooms opened and boy were they jam packed with people clammoring to find the newest, neatest, coolest thing in all of ventriloquism. My first stop was the Gottle O geer table which is Tom Ladshaws table. Tom is a great guy and is always there along with his better half Leslye to provide us with the coolest collectibles. If I knew just a fraction of the ventriloquism history Tom knows I'd be a genius..Tom is a great historian of the ventriloquial art.

Tom has such a great collection of publications and collectibles for sale that I can spend hours scanning through them. While I was looking through old Oracles and IBV publications Tamara spotted Sammy King and of course had to get her picture with Sammy. Sammy is a great Ventriloquist who in 2009 retired his act with Fransisco and donated his life long pal to the Vent Haven Museum.

2011 Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention part 1

Last weekend was the 35th Annual Vent Haven Ventriloquist ConVention held in Fort Mitchell Kentucky. Yes, I did say Kentucky. Fort Mitchell is the home of the Worlds biggest and best collection of Ventriloquiana. Founded by William Shakespear Burger and now maintained by a board of advisors it continues to provide a wonderful history of our art of Ventriloquism.

Tamara and I were able to attend and enjoy the festivities along with..get this..536 total in attendance. This was a record for attendance and the reason is simple..The theme of the ConVention was 70 years of entertainment by non other then Jimmy Nelson. As mentioned in the previous post Jimmy Nelson is responsible for many ventriloquists of today getting into vent.

As I have mentioned, the focus of this years event was a celebration of Jimmy Nelsons 70 years in entertainment and it was titled "70 Years of laughter". Unlike other years where the focus is tips and techniques to improve as a vent the focus this time was all about Jimmy. Of course there were lectures and shows as always but the primary theme was Jimmy and Betty Nelson. Tom Ladshaw put together a video presentation called "70 minutes of laughter" as a highlight reel and it was fantastic to watch! Along with that there were a boatload of great items given to registrants who joined in to celebrate. There was a shoulder bag, a 4 pinback set depicting Danny O'Day, Farfal, Humphrey Higsby, and Fatatateta, a huge book with a biography of Jimmy as well as a treasure trove of photographs, a poster(not shown in photo as it is safely rolled and stored awaiting framing in the coming week. All of these things were organized and Coordinated by Tom Ladshaw who deserves tremendous kudos for all his hard work and effort.

In upcoming posts over the week I will share the highlights of the cenvention from my perspective along with additional photos taken at the event.

2011 Vent Haven ConVention

Well here it is, Saturday July 16th and it's the last day of what has been a Great ConVention here in Fort Mitchell kentucky. The theme of the Convention has is a tribute to Jimmy Nelson. A great Ventriloquist but more over a great human being. Jimmy has influenced SO many people young and old alike. He has touched the hearts and created laughter for 70 years as an entertainer.

Through his course "Instant ventriloquism" he has inspired some of the great vents of today. Jeff Dunham, Jay Johnson, Terry fator, Tom Ladshaw, Dan Horn and the list goes on and on.

We have taken lots of pictures and met lots of great Vents this year....

Three Stooges Movie

Well its in production The Three Stooges Movie and I, much like many I assume, do not know how to feel about this. Is it possible to recreate something that is so iconic in our culture as the comedy teams of old? The Three Stooges are a classic to many, young and old and being nostalgic as I am I fear it might not be doing the franchise much help. However, having said that it may also help to bring new fans aboard..did you see what just happened right there? I waffled and began to rethink my original point. Not really. As a Stooges Fan I think anything that will put our favorite knuckleheads in the spot light is a good thing. I hope it creates a resurgance like no other and we see those laughable, lovable, nut jobs everywhere...and the Stooges too! ;)

Lets give it a chance and hope it makes everyone a Three Stooges fan!

As we celebrate the Independance of our Great Country lets also celebrate those who help to keep it free. Starting with the Soldiers who protect our land with their very lives. This is a great country and we need to keep that in mind before we complain about our rights and freedoms. If we are not happy with something then we have to stand up and make our voices heard. Our founding fathers who put it all on the line to establish this country as a free country would have worked in vein if we just sit by and do not take a part in our own governing.

Enough soap boxing for me..lets make today a GREAT day and enjpy the freedom we have and spend time with those we love.

Ronn Lucas, straight man to such comedy genius' as Buffalo Billy, Scorch the teenage dragon, and Chuck the punk rocker. Ronn is truely entertaining with tremendous "Ventriloquial mechanical skills" (hehe bet ya never heard that one before eh? ) Ronn is also a geniune guy. I had the chance to meet him a couple times at his show in las Vegas and he took time at the end of the show to chat "Vent" and talk about the show. He was Honored in 2005 with the Askins award from the International Ventriloquist Association. Check out his youtube page for some great clips.

Willie Tyler and Lester Goodness

Willie Tyler is a talented Ventriloquist and a joy to see perform. Year ago I was able to see a show he did in the Detroit area and his show was great. He can sing wonderfully and Lester is always fun.

Time to Geek out for the Hobbit

Well it's looking like more and more great information is becoming available for the latest Peter Jackson Installment in the J.R.R. Tolkein's Middle Earth. I first read the Hobbit when I was in 7th grade. I remember the school year ending and there I was, mid June early 1980's and I was sitting out in the yard under a tree reading the Hobbit. Of course i did eventually finish the book and spent lots of time at the lake a bike riding but the whole time I was thinking about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and how much i wanted to be a Hobbit myself. I did favor them a bit with my ever constant barefeet and love of fine foods. heh. Of course ever since the Hobbit I have always had a fondness of Hobbits. Most all of the characters I ever played in Dungeons & Dragons have been halflings. The character I play in Lord of the Rings online is a hobbit. I guess deep down I am a Hobbit stuck in a 6 foot tall mans body. ;)

Enough about me lets take a look at a video Peter Jackson has put out at the beginning of production of The Hobbit in new Zealand.

Sir Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Wizard and the role of Bilbo Baggins being played by Martin Freeman. Andy Serkis will reprise his role of Gollum and a host of new faces for the throng of Dwarves. The full list can be seen on this IMDB listing.

Drinking and Driving

I was thinking now that the summer is here and there are a lot of parties and open houses for grads we need to be aware of the potential for drinking and driving. In 2006 I had the opportunity to work with a High School SADD group on a Mock accident to impress upon the kids the dangers of drinking and driving. It's a good program but I think we all need to be mindful and responsible.

Howard the Duck!!

Remember this movie from the 1980's? I loved it then and we watched it a few months ago and it still held up to me as a blast from the past. Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, and Jeffrey Jones round out the cast of co-stars to Howard.

Go watch it..it holds up. I think the Howard suit/makeup was darn good. Not sure who did it though..I looked at the IMDB but didn't see who made the Duck suit.

Super 8

Went to see this new movie by J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg tonight. I loved the retro feel of the late 70's early 80's along with the fact the kids in the film were making a film. I loved Super 8 when i was young and have a few of the cameras to this day. I won't go any more in to the story other then to say if you like Sci-Fi-esque films this is a must see!

I was specifically loved the fact that one of the kids in the film did makeup and makeup fx and when asked where he learned how to do it he says he learned from the Dick Smith Monster makeup handbook. Score one for the film makers on this Homage to the great makeup master of our time, Dick Smith.

One other note is that one of the characters has a Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist dummy in his bedroom which I thought was a cool touch. J.J. Abrams has a Ventriloquist figure of himself that was made by noted Figure make Tim Selberg. Nice touch Mr. Abrams.

Jewels and a New Car!

Am I lucky or what? OK here's the skinny. I had the opportunity to spend 1 hour and 10 minutes swinging yesterday..swinging a metal detector coil that is. It was a fun diversion from a long day. I was workign in a downriver city and decided at the end of the day to stop at a local park I have been eye balling for months. Well in just over an hour I had managed to dig up 26 coins in total for a whopping $2.69, along with a 2010 Mustang and a bracelet. probably the most I have dug in such a short period of time. It was a nice break from a long day but it was a HOT out.

Mike Finney is a Fantastic Comedy Magician. About 7 yrs ago i had the great opportunity to meet him briefly at Chris Reesamans Encore Magic which was in Flint Michigan at the time and he was very kind and funny. I am a huge fan of his magic as it is greatly entertaining. He also runs a charity event every year called the Dry Heat Classic which raises money for chariable organizations.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead". While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."

The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the meaning back to the day. What is needed is a full return to the original day of observance. Set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country.
But what may be needed to return the solemn, and even sacred, spirit back to Memorial Day is for a return to its traditional day of observance. Many feel that when Congress made the day into a three-day weekend in with the National Holiday Act of 1971, it made it all the easier for people to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day. As the VFW stated in its 2002 Memorial Day address: "Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."

Loved this scene from the movie Chicago. Of course the Ventriloquist theme is the main reason but over all it's just fun. had the opportunity to go see the musical on may 19th at the Fox Theater in Detroit and it was great. Be sure to check it out if it comes to your town, well worth it.

So I was working in the field last wednesday and was behind this truck at a light. Talk about multi tasking everything. I didn't get to see what the side fo the truck said but it was a work van so i am guessing his job wasn't to just drive around looking for potential clients looking for a divorce lawyer. I guess it struck me funny and sad at the same time.

I am NOT promoting the site I just thought is was something else the lengths some will go to. Like sites prmoting cheating..I guess they go hand in hand eh? The cheating web sites and the divorce ads. heh.

ok..not so much treasure and not so much IN the water..but close and close.

Went out earlier this week to get some fresh air and took the Metal detector down to the lake picnic area. Spent about 1 1/2 hours digging junk and had a great time! Was refreshing to get some air and some added excercize. It worked out be a cup of various trash items such as foil and glass and such trash. The end result was $1.68 worth of coins dating from 1959 to 1990. (4 quarters, 6-dimes, 8- Pennies)

I was using the Fisher F2 metal detector and the fpoint pin pointer which was handy but you have to pretty much touch the object with it to find it. But, in dirt findin a copper coin or even the other coins were oxidzed so much they blended in it did help. Anywhooo...the best part was gettign out and about after this long cold winter. Now I can't wait to get back out and get my hands dirty again.

Above all else..enjoy yourself it whatever you do.

(missing the makeup and animating but this summer plan on building a shed and getting some room in the garage to rebuild the work area. ) =)

He then asked
the students again
if the jar was full..
They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full.
The students responded
with an unanimous
"yes."

The professor then produced
two cups of coffee from under the table
And poured the entire contents
into the jar, effectively
filling the Empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor,
as the laughter subsided,
"I want you to recognize that
this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things -
God, family, children, health,
friends, and Favorite passions --
things that if everything else was lost
and only they remained,
your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter
like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else --
the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first,"
he continued,
"there is no room for
the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time
and energy on the small stuff,
you will never have room for
the things that are
important to you.

So...

Pay attention to the things
that are critical to your happiness.
Play With your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
Play another 18.

There will always be time
to clean the house
and fix the disposal.

"Take care of the golf balls first --
the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand
and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.
"I'm glad you asked".

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Hey gang I just wanted to remind you if you haven't read Jeff's new book "All By My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed, and Me" it is a great read with a lot of funnny stories and and a wonderful insight into the world of a comedian. The trials fo the road and the dedication it took for Jeff to get to the top of his game. He has busted his a$$ and I admire his tenacity in doing so. I read the book when it came out and I am now listening to the autio book while driving back and forth to the office. Both well worth getting.

And then don'f forget his DVD's Arguing with myself and Spark of insanity. Good comedy and fun times.

Now, grab some popcorn and a drink and go enjoy the fun of Jeff and the gang.

Wow here it is already February 21st and it was Christmas just last wek. (or so it feels)

2011 is off and running with a lot in store for Cj and Buster. We are making plans to get back to Fort Mitchell Kentucky in July for the annual Ventriloquists ConVention which will be a tribute to the wonderful ventriloquist and great all around person, Jimmy Nelson. C'mon..we all know the jimgle...N-e-s-t-l-e-s Nestles makes the very best...."Chawklit"! Danny O'Day and Farfel are sure to be there along with his wonderful wife Betty.

In other areas of the varied and odd habits of a strange one I will be building a shed this spring for storage so i can reclaim my garage to have my workshop set up. My animation table has been used as a storage stabd for 2 years now and I need to set up animation Buster's home again and get those 3 short snippets moving. Not to mention setting up an oven to bake foam latex in and having a space to work on my molds for puppets and make ups, which is one other thing I swore I needed to do this year, more make ups.

So with all that in the works and having the full + time day job we all know how it is easy to fall behind on personal projects..this is the new year and I will be getting those things off and running again. After having such beautiful weather last week then getting dumped on yesterday with 10+ inches of snow it also makes me realize if I want to be able to have my workshop again it will need heat..oh yeah. hehe

Happy Belated New Year to all and stop in again for the mishaps and misadventures of a Man and his Bear.

Hope everyone has had a wonderful November and a very Happy Thanksgiving. My November saw the return of CJ and Buster doing a Magic Show for a Red Hat Group. It was fun and Buster was the star of the show once again. They enjoyed the magic but as soon as Buster crashed the party everyone enjoyed it even more. Guess it goes to show Buster is is no dummy when it comes to entertaining the ladies. Of course Buster had to show up with a Red Hat to show his support as well as gain brownie points with the ladies.

Winter is upon us here in the Great North and we're rapidly preparing for the snow and cold nights.

In the coming month I need to take 2 life casts and perpare some silicone prosthetics for a short film being directed by my Son Zach. This will be a nice renewal into makeup for me. I did finally use the zombie appliance I made last year for Halloween this year and it was fun scaring the trick or treaters. Heh.

4th of July Weekend

Beautiful sunrise

Had the oppertunity to work on a movie set this weekend(Saturday the 3rd) so my son Nick and I went. The film is a period piece set during the Civil War. A group of reenactors were needed in Saline Michigan for the battle scenes. We were up before the crack of dawn to make the 1.25 hour drive. Arrived at 6:30am and then proceeded to sit. We then had the chance to sit some more. And then it got real exciting, we had our make-up applied, and then back to sitting. About 11:30 we were loaded into the bed of a flat bed truck like cattle and driven tot he set where the filming was to take place, and...sat some more. Finally we all took the field, they did two passes of a Union battle line scene and then broke for a 30 minute lunch which took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Finally it was time. We donned our gear and hit the field shooting for the next 4 hours or so pretty non stop, in wool in 88 degree weather. We drank a LOT of water to keep our fluids replenished during the sweat fest. Sounds glamourous doesn't it? Ultimately we were done and headed out and talking about our day and we both agreed if we had that chance to do it over would we? YEP! It really was a good time and helped us see what goes on behind the scenes a bit more since we both love film and aspire to work in it more.

Who is that Union Soldier?
This guy? Oh he is just a poser since later int he day he turned rebel. (ok I have to be honest. We ALL were asked to take on Confederate roles that day. Can you say, Cross dresser?)

Not sure when the film is slated to be released or if it will be direct to video ro not but it was fun and as fo now the title is "War Flowers" and will star Christina Ricci, Tom Berenger, and Jason Gedrick. Check it out if you get a chance when it comes out.

Welcome to the new decade! Several things to talk about but first wanted to wish everyone a VERY happy New Year. I hope 2009 was a great year and wish you all the best for 2010!!

My last post of 2009 was about the Fantastic Mr. Fox and at the time I had not seen the movie. Since I have been to see it twice and must say it is a great movie. I love stopmotion animation and they did a great job with this one. I have been reading the making of the Fantastic Mr Fox book and it has some really good behind the scenes information as well. Anyone who knows me know I love to see what goes on behind the finished work as much as the finished work itself, yet in doing so does not detract from the enjoyment of the movie.

the post which is now below this one due to embedding issues is a cool award acceptance speech by Wes Anderson for the national board of review award. How creative. =)

ahh..heck fire ...tryting to post this from work and now with interuptions my train of thought has derailed.

With Halloween having just passed thought this would fit in nicely here and his timing..well now that I think about it maybe thats why he released this when he did...Hmm..

As for myself and Halloween, well I had to work and for Saturday I decided I wanted to dress up so planned on using a zombie outfit I made a few years ago and had no makeup planned, sooooo I sculpted an appliance over an old lifemask uaing wed clay, first time trying to do an appliance makeup with Wed and it was different, will try more soon. I sculpted and made the ultracal 30 mold and made a Platsil Gel 10 appliance..but alas did not have enough time for application. But, I must say Platsil Gel 10 is very cool..I see why everyone is falling in love with it. I will get some pics up of the makeup once it's installed..I dind't have my camera when I did the sculpt so no progress pics.

I love music, and the lyrics. This song is Sad but hopefully makes us stop for a minute to realize how we need to make time for the little things..the little one..the loved ones.

Of course we all have songs that speak to our hearts and souls and some are great memories and others are sad memories. Above all else, smile, it causes a good feeling to spread through your body and helps to cheer you up. All of us have a limited amount of time to leave our mark on this Earth and to teach our children all we can to help them along their way.

If nothing else today, tell those you love just how much it is that you love them. Smile for a moment when you feel upset or angry and feel how it changes everything.

My son and I saw this over the weekend, fun movie!

If you like comedies, I know your thinking, "but Chris it's a Zombie movie", it's a comedy folks! VERY fun, memorable scenes, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll tell your friends about it. Ok maybe not, but you will laugh!

Worth the price of admission.

now go, stop surfing the net, go see this movie. If we don't go to the movies who will make them and then what will we have..Monopoly on friday nights? GO GO GO

That was the wisdom form my 2 year old this weekend when I asked her to let me put on her sandals. I was floored at first..then realized she did indeed say that and I proceeded to allow her to finish. She made me realize that sometimes I need to be a bit more patient and allow her to be a big girl.

Had a great weekend playing games with the kids and trying to go to the Michigan State Game, only to realize there were no tickets to be had, Sooooo..we walked to the local B'dubs and enjoyed some wings and "pops". A Blow OUT! 44 to 3 MSU over Montana State. Spent what may well be the last trip to the lake by the house this season as well since the weather will be changing soon. Was great fun. =)

Will be appearing 2 days this week at Applebees, Tuesday the 8th and Wednesday the 9th and will not have an appearance Tuesday the 15th as i will be attending the Server Olympics with the staff from our store competing with other stores. Looking forward to it. =)
